Understanding Blinds and the Betting Structure
For each round of texas holdem poker , there
must be a designated dealer whose position on the table will
determine who starts the betting rounds. Once the first dealer
is chosen, the position will rotate clockwise after each game
of holdem. At the start of a new texas holdem session, usually
the first person to the table is the first dealer, and from then
on the dealer rotates clockwise after each pot is won.
Typically players are required to bet a blind
before they ever receive any cards. It is called a blind because
you are forced to bet without knowing what your cards will be.
The reason for blinds is to keep the game interesting. If blinds
weren't required, players would be able to fold every pocket
hand until they had good cards. Poker is a betting game, and
if there's nothing at stake, it's not worth playing. Blinds are
usually increased as the session progresses in order to raise
the stakes as things progress. This is useful in tournaments
or home games where the goal is to have one final winner and
the game is going slowly. Usually there are two blinds in each
game, one small blind and one big blind. The amount of the blind
depends on the limit of the betting and is pre-determined.
This is where the position of the dealer
comes in with the betting structure. The players directly to
the left of the dealer, going clockwise, are the ones who bet
the blinds. The order is dealer, small blind, big blind. After
the small and big blinds have been paid, the person to the immediate
left of the big blind starts the first betting round. They have
the option to call the big blind, raise, or fold their hand.
The betting will then continue in a clockwise direction all the
way back to the player who paid the small blind. This player
will have already contributed half the big blind, so they will
have the choice to call the remainder of the bet, along with
any raises, or just fold their hand. Next, the player who bet
the big blind will have the option to call, raise, or fold.
In each subsequent betting round of texas
holdem , the betting structure is as follows: the bet will start
with the small blind-or, if the small blind has folded, the first
person to the left of the small blind-and ends with the dealer,
or the last active player to the right if the dealer has folded.
Players may check, call, raise, or fold up to the set table limits
of that game.
When you find yourself in the position of
the big or small blind, it will affect your betting strategy
because the stakes will automatically be higher for you, as you
already have money in the pot. This can be an advantage or disadvantage.
For example, if you are in the big blind and there are no raises,
you will won't need to increase your bet to see the flop. But
on the other hand, if your in the big blind and there is raising,
you'll need to decide if your hand is worth risking more than
you've already bet.
